What are you doing that causes them to think the other band is better/you are trash? |
Are you still playing the same sorts of stand tunes that bands played 20+ years ago? Have you modernized your library to play stuff that today's kids listen to, or is Louie Louie still a staple?
Not that there's anything wrong (IMO) with older music - but there are arrangements of selections by modern artists that are accessible and more in line with what the kids want to play and hear. We don't need to keep only playing "Land of 1000 Dances" and "The Hey Song" if the kids would rather hear/play "All I Do is Win" or some Justin Timberlake, or the latest Bruno Mars song. In all seriousness - look at your stand tune library, and what's in your folder.
As country as a school may be, many/most kids want more hip-hop in the music selections. There aren't a lot of legit arrangements of recent hip hop music available, but there are a few that can be found, even from "independent arrangers." Even adding one or two of those will go a long way.
Do your kids play with the same intensity and support for the football team that the team sees on Saturday afternoons? That's the standard you're being held to.
All that being said, the kid complaining on social media is wrong to complain that way - but if one kid says it, another twenty are talking about it. Find ways to bring your program into the 21st century that won't hold back your performance on the marching field. It can be done, and your team and community will probably thank you for it.
