Iíve done Twilight and Contempo. Twilight was beautiful, but you really have to look at tuning, balance, and exposed passages. Itís slow and pretty, and as one of my mentors said, if youíre going to play something pretty and gushy, make sure it gushes - lots of expressivity or it sounds like a beginner book etude. |
Contempo is challenging. Modern chords that need just the right balance and tuning, lots of exposed and thin passages, judges tend to be picky about contemporary style, some interesting rhythmic parts (triangle and tambourine duet almost rendered me bald) and your trumpets have to tune really well. I love this piece, but it can be a bear if youíre not careful.
