So the two things you'll need to know when its cold. |
First, your kids are going to go flat. It's just the nature of colder, more dense air. You'll have to adjust about 1/2" on trumpets, 3/4" on low brass, and 1" on tubas for every 10 degrees colder than your standard tuning temp. This is also true of going hotter, but you'll be going sharp.
Now, in regards to after warm up but before your show starts, give the kids 30-40 seconds of getting hot air blown through their instruments. As it gets colder the horns get colder faster. So you'll need the kids to get them back up to body temperature before they play.
That's what I do and was taught by a veteran director and it has worked well.
