I respectfully disagree. Purchasing an instrument would benefit your entire program. If you need another tuba to round out the section, buy a tuba. If you need some new percussion equipment because you are constantly borrowing chimes from other schools, buy a set of chimes. While the idea of your administrators supplying funds for every instrument you need sounds nice, it is highly impractical. I ran a discount card fundraiser at a CCC MS that brought in over $11k per year four years in a row. It was discount cards. I used the funds to pay for our spring festival and purchase music and equipment. I actually got in trouble for not spending all of the money the first year. I left a buffer of about $2,000 in my "activity account" that rolled over to the next year. Whatever...I did what I thought was appropriate for the group. I asked them what other group brought in that much for a fundraiser and told them I knew what I was doing. |
If you wait for your district to buy all of the necessary equipment for your program, you'll be waiting a while.
Our fundraiser was... unexpectedly successful this year ($10,000 net income just from fundraiser, CCC MS Program) and we are now trying to think of how to spend the money to benefit the students. 1st priority is to use it to offset trip costs and beef up our already planned events. If you had this amount of money come in, how would you spend it for your program? We already upgraded our sound system last year. I'd like to avoid buying new instruments as that really should be a district purchase and it also does not benefit ALL students.
