Way back in summer Band we had quite a few students that missed days of summer band. The last couple of weeks we have had quite a few with grades below 70.
Therefore I hesitated to add students to the drill. (82 in the drill)
Now I have around 15 students that can play standing on the sidelines that could actually help us musically during the show.
We have some props that they can move but are there any other creative options that you guys have used.
Does having them play on the sidelines create a problem with the playing and marching percentage issue?
I have often had alternates stand on the sideline and play. You may need to consider exactly where to stage them, but if they can help you musically, definitely use them.
I don't think a judge will make any comment about them unless they are causing musical issues (pulse, blend, balance, etc).
For several years we've had a "Secondary." They march at all rehearsals, and have a marching assignment. They have the same responsibilities as everyone else in the main portion of the drill, but their drill is a little easier. They sit on top of the main marching block and so long as they can stay in step, hold their horns correctly, have their music passed off, and do not miss turns they march on Fridays but not at UIL.
BTW we're military so if we can do it a corps style band can (assuming you're corps).
Many bands have a "B" block that marches a simplified drill but still plays.
I know this doesn't help you a week or two out, but keep it in mind for next year.
