If you're talking marching band, he'd be out of the show. No question. Whether the excuse is valid or not doesn't matter, if you miss two weeks, I'm putting someone else in your spot. When he can prove that he's caught up, MAYBE he can have his spot back. By that time you'll probably be past contest season anyway.
If this is more a beginner/MS band situation, I would just follow whatever consequences are in the student handbook. Admin can decide if his missing assignments are excused or not. Hold him to the same standard as everyone else. He'll either work hard to catch up, or not. It's not your problem.
Good morning all!
I have a trombone student who has missed the last 2 full weeks of school due to his parents taking him on vacation to Hawaii(why didn't they take me instead?).
I get it, if you work a "normal" job and get 2 week of paid vacation every year why not use them during a slow season. But at least own up to it and take the unexcused absences for your student.
I don't know what to do. The kid is now WAY behind and I don't want to punish him for his parents decision but I also can't just let it fly...just isn't in me.
