I have been asked how I recorded my bands for Honor Band submissions. A good pair of mics is essential. I've used Shure 57s a lot and they weren't expensive. Placement of the mics is critical. I used a 12 foot single mount for my 2 mics placing them as close to my stage as possible. Isolating audience noise by closing off the first few rows of seating is ideal. Another way I isolated crowd noise was placing a 2×2 foot piece of clear polyethylene behind the mics on the stand. This was my biggest secret to minimizing crowd noise. I would angle the mics about 15 degrees off center to capture some of the ambience of the stage and adjust a rear curtain to allow some reverb which requires some experimenting to get the effect you want. Too much ambience can Muddy things up. Experiment and discover you can often get a decent recording!
