Muskogee Public Schools is now accepting applications for an Assistant Band Director with an emphasis on percussion. We are seeking a percussionist with strong marching arts experience, ideally with a background in or familiarity with a BOA-style percussion program, who is excited to help continue the growth and excellence of our marching percussion program.
This position offers a competitive salary above many Oklahoma pay scales, along with very competitive stipends for marching band, percussion, and other assigned duties.
Position Overview
The ideal candidate is a collaborative educator who values musical excellence, student growth, discipline, and pride, and who is eager to be part of a team-oriented band program. Responsibilities will align with the candidate’s strengths and experience.
Responsibilities (experience-dependent)
Develop and rehearse the marching percussion program in collaboration with the percussion staff.
Serve as a member of the marching band show design team (based on experience).
Teach and reinforce marching fundamentals and visual concepts (as applicable).
Conduct and assist with marching and concert band rehearsals.
Plan and lead rehearsals that build musicianship, teamwork, and school spirit.
Assist with program logistics, including budgets, inventories, and fundraising.
Help coordinate travel, instrument maintenance, and student leadership.
Collaborate with administrators, parents, and boosters to maintain strong community support.
Recruit and retain students while maintaining high performance standards.
Example Teaching Schedule
1st Period: High School Band (Marching & Concert – seasonal)
2nd Period: Travel to Junior High
3rd Period: Assist – 8th Grade Wind Ensemble
4th Period: Assist – 8th Grade Jazz Band
5th Period: Mixed Ensemble Band II (HS – small ensembles / region preparation)
6th Period: Travel to Junior High
7th Period: Assist – 9th Grade Jazz Band
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (required)
Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate
Out-of-state certified applicants must be willing to obtain OK certification
Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
Valid CDL license preferred (or willingness to obtain after hire)
