Technically the student is supposed to perform as written. But in reality I usually don't.
I instruct my students to ask the judge if they would like to hear the repeats. Most will say whichever way you feel comfortable (or along those lines). I also let my students know to be prepared to play the repeats. I don't think I ever once had a student play a repeat. Da capo/segno and coda are different and will typically do those.
