Do what's best for the child. If they are having vision problems it would be safer to put him/her in the front and have him/her play a concert bass drum part.

Is he/she your only bass drum on the field? If so then I would make sure the tenor(s) play a part on the lower drums with lots of low notes on the beat, which probably means re-writing the part.
