I've had a few interviews. I've seen who they hired and their accomplishments. There is no way in my current position that I'll take a band to Midwest, make it State marching, or advance in Honor Band. I've applied to assistant positions only to be told I'm overqualified (nearing 20 years experience, most as head director). I assume they're worried that I'll try to take over and run things "my way."
I know, I could take a job in the sticks and build a program. I've done that. I'm tired. I want to work somewhere that the middle schools can keep a band director and they are doing well enough that the incoming freshmen can play and I don't have to reteach Bb scale. Somewhere that I'm not scrapping for enough budget money for basics. Where kids take private lessons.
What else can I do to build the resume?
