If it's a brass person, ask them what a typical beginner clarinet class might look like. Let them ask follow up questions (beginning of the year, middle, etc.) Same thing but vice versa for woodwinds. Ask percussionist to describe a non-percussion class.
Ask them what a typical non-varsity rehearsal looks like. Ask them what they see themselves doing during a varsity rehearsal.
What are values you find important? If you value communication and they don't mention it, that's big.
