I was an All-Stater in high school and sat in the same room with kids who used the same reed all semester. Some are just in it to be a part of a team and take the trips.

That doesn't mean you throw away a "standard," you just have to recognize what the "standard" can be in your particular situation. Not every band will be the Honor Band.
