I cut out 95%ish of sugars and carbs. I ate half a bar of a kit kat, or 1-2 squares of Hershey's as my daily treat. When I did eat carbs, I had complex carbs such as sweet potatoes and ate them at the end of my meal because I believe ingesting protein first helps. I did a lot of reading online and my own research. I always packed a snack in case I had an emergency because they could happen. Walking after helps too since your glucose continues to rise for up to 2 hours after eating.
I suggest cutting out fast food, and snacks. It's hard to cut cold turkey, so just do it less. You have to be disciplined, because it's difficult. When the band bus stopped at Whataburger, I had a burger with only one bread, no fries, and water. You have to make this change. You have to chose your health. Meal prep on Sundays, don't work more hours than you have to, delegate so you have help, because at the end of the day, you'll be going to dialysis while nobody at your school remembers you. Look up low carb meals with protein like chicken wings, steak, always include vegetables that can be steamed or sauteed, and complex carbs as I mentioned earlier. You can do it. I'm not a dietician and I basically did a keto diet which isn't good long term, but it's low carb high fat such as avacado, bacon, cottage cheese, do your research. Best of luck.
