I wrote a show last year that used Hans Zimmer's 160bpm as the opener. As is usually the case with Zimmer's music, there is a repetitive rhythm which in this case was in 7/8. The original base pattern is 8th notes on 1-3-5-7. I embedded that rhythm into alternating measures of 4 and 3 (7/4) with 8ths on the downbeats of 1-2-3 with 2 8ths on 4 then 8ths on the upbeats in the 3/4 measure. Once the students internalized the base rhythm pattern, it seemed natural to them. I wrote the drill as well and as someone suggested, all of the drill moves that required marching on the beat were done in sets of 14 or 18. Any odd count phrases were standstill and do body movement or were flutters. Check out the Bluecoats 2010 show using 160bpm as the opener. Many years ago, I wrote a Carmina Burana show that included some 3/8 beats in the drum feature and the students did a high-knee lift step on the 3/8 to account for the extra 8th note.
