The University of Texas Wind Ensemble will present the second concert of our continuing 50th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, October 13th, at 4:00 PM CDT in Bates Recital Hall. We will continue to offer a section of seats for students to attend Wind Ensemble concerts free of charge. All requests for student group comp tickets should be sent directly to the Butler School Box Office at tickets@mail.music.utexas.edu. The earlier you make a request, the more likely it is that we'll have seats still available! I would like to request that accurate numbers be requested, please. At several recent concerts schools requested large numbers of tickets but less than half of those were actually claimed. It would be helpful to receive an accurate number, or an email informing us that a smaller number will be required so that we can accommodate as many patrons as possible.
The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. Robert Carnochan, who tragically passed away September 18. Dr. Carnochan was the Associate Director of Bands in the Butler School for thirteen years, where he served with distinction as director of the Longhorn Band and conductor of the Wind Symphony.
The concert will open with Gao Hong’s Celebration. Ms. Hong is one of the world’s preeminent Pipa performers, and about Celebration, she wrote: In China, we have many festivals that we celebrate each year. In this piece I use drum solos interspersed with instrumental passages to create joyful rhythms and melodies that depict the festive atmosphere of families gathering together in a festival. The slow middle section expresses the peoples’ yearning for peace, prosperity, and happiness.
Next on the program, DMA conducting candidate Tyler Ehrlich will conduct the premiere of his arrangement of Margaret Bonds’ Spiritual Suite. The first half will conclude with Master’s conducting assistant Jimmy Santos-Rivera conducting Angel Peña’s Fragmentos de mi tierra. This suite of Puerto Rican folk music receives its first performance on the mainland.
The second half opens with Merlin Patterson’s new setting of Percy Grainger’s Mock Morris which will be followed by Grainger’s magnum opus, Lincolnshire Posy. The concert will conclude with Ron Nelson’s magnificent Epiphanies.
We hope that you and your students can join us for what will be a terrific concert as we continue our 18-month-long celebration of this storied ensemble’s golden anniversary.
