Haveing a MIDI keyboard makes it easier, but it's not necessary. You can use your computer keyboard to enter notes. Number pad for duration, letters for pitches. It's pretty smart about knowing which octave you want, but you can ctrl+shift+up or down to change octave on the last note entered.
