The question to ask is "Why are they missing?" Did the parents plan trips during this time? Are they the caretaker for siblings during the summer? Are they choosing not to show up? What reason is valid (out of students control) versus not-valid (actively chose to not attend)? The standard you set can make a negative impact moving forward. This time is important but if a student is missing due to conflicts with family (visiting dad/mom in a split household, vacations planned because that is the only time parents can take off work, etc.) why should the student be punished? |
