Re: Volleyball"
Once upon a time, the football and volleyball schedules had the same exact games on Friday nights and were in the same districts. On Friday nights, the voleyball players would simply walk over from the gym to join the band. But UIL in their typical ivory tower fashion, decided to make all the volleyball and foothall districts different. I still remember the outcry against this move from band directors, cheerleader and drill team sponsors and the coaches, themselves. It fell on the usual deaf ears of UIL and they went ahead with their plan. The rest is history. History that the new generation of band directors are now dealing with. Another thing, some band directors bend over backwards to work with coaches, but the coaches have no interest and only care about their sport. This often happens in athletic crazy towns where parents think their child will be the next pro whatever star. On a personal note, I really get sick of hearing, "work with the coaches or share the kids" when band directors are the only ones doing the sharing and compromising in many cases. Let's just be honest and use the correct terminology. The parents, coaches and kids will put ahtletics first at all times and will throw band under the bus anytime there is a conflict with sports. The first thing out of a kid or parent's mouth is, "I can't be there, I have a game or practice," instead of, "There's a conflict, I want to see if we can do both, do you have any ideas so that we can try to come up with a solution?" Nope, typically you'll never hear that. Sometimes, you'll be lucky if they even bother to even ention the conflict. Sometimes, they'll just not show up and then say nothing and even get an attitude if you asked them why they missed the band rehearsal or performance.
