As far as my volleyball experience, I've had more conflicts with volleyball than with football. I've had good band students quit because of the possibility that they'd get moved up to varsity v-ball if they just "demonstrated more dedication to the sport." Also, be careful with students getting asked to call lines during your scheduled rehearsal time. Any volleyball student can do that. It doesn't have to be a band kid but some will try to use that as a legitimate excuse to miss rehearsal time. As others have already stated, communication is key. I've had coaches rearrange their game schedule if you need certain kids for rehearsal. One year, all my band kids were on varsity so they played their games first and JV played afterward so I could get the varsity girls sooner. Cultivate that relationship with the coaches and don't ever let students see your frustration.
