However, for the folks saying 5A-6A folks don’t understand what’s going on might be a stretch. Most have been around or have previously taught in smaller school or middle school settings.
Sure, there are some that have much higher standards as they are around great programs. But, a good judge is a “good” judge. I am comfortable judging at any level and always take into consideration the size and age of the band.
As for being tough, I can honestly say the standard for 1st division is not near as high as it used to be. When I was in HS, 2’s and 3’s were common. Only the bands “worthy of a first place finish” were granted 1st divisions. You can go and look at ratings from the 80’s and 90’s. Honor band directors even earned some of those ratings. It was tough and when your band earned sweepstakes…YOU EARNED IT!
I think ratings this year were more in line with pre-Covid standards. I think we all got used to the grace received during and the next few years after.
Having said all that…I still feel 114 and 441 is not a good example of aligned standards.
