Our state has had state wide competitions for bands both marching and concert for virtually forever.
Especially for marching band, those large scale successes were seen by the public due to how highly attended the run of the mill football program is here and that made other schools want to be able to keep up.
Let that snowball for years and years.
MANY band directors in the state not only competed in DCI while they were young, but also continued to work as staff for years in addition to leading their own programs.
The short of it is, our bands in this state are so good because marching band is so good.
Our activity also being co-curricular as opposed to extra-curricular. The TEA-UIL side-by-side allowing us to grade before/after school rehearsals as necessary parts of our program.
