The students did their very best in sight reading, but always ended up with a second division, which I was still very proud of considering how far they progressed during the course of the year.
Had they played just a level lower than what the non-varsity groups were required to play, I believe they could have had a realistic chance (if the piece was appropriate for the level).
My suggestion is to keep taking them to C/SR. I'm sure there are students in your 4th group who will benefit and grow from the experience. Many times there were students in my program who the next year ended up in the non-varsity ("second") group, and continued to be positive contributors to the program.
