If you guys get along and you feel like they see you as a colleague and not an underling then I would talk with them about it. If your HD is an old school domineering type you may have to keep your head down until you get out of there. Remember, references WILL call your HD and principal when you apply for a new job. Do not go in there guns blazing throwing out law and policy. Just let them know that you would appreciate a break for lunch and that you are more than willing to keep up with the work load, but you would appreciate the break you are wanting. If they continue to push back THEN you can have a conversation with admin about it.
BE WARNED, however!
If your HD has a good relationship with admin this could back fire on you pretty hard. Again, I do not know the state of your relationship with your HD. I do know that it is RARE that an assistant wins any kind of battle with a HD. I would, in your case, try to have that conversation and if you don't get the answer you want-it may be time to find a better fit for you. There is nothing wrong with that. I would just be careful beyond a conversation with your HD. If you are a young director, and it sounds like you are, your HD may be trying to keep you busy. Some HD's believe that their program is only great if you are always working. I don't subscribe to that, but a lot of the older guard does.
I would begin looking for a new position if that conversation goes sour.
Best of luck!
