There are also behaviors that were common a generation ago that are virtually eliminated today.
Phones, parenting, covid, all are to blame. But IMO it's the fact that this generation of kids, middle school especially, had their formative "how to solve problems with others" years (ie, grades 3-5) disrupted by covid teaching and distance learning. They didn't learn conflict resolution, and were constantly exposed to the worst sorts of behaviors due to being on an iPad or Chromebook at home 8+ hours a day.
A generation ago, kids would come back from summer break and be a bit wild, but settle down. Now they have that "summer break" mentality all year long.
The solution? There isn't only one. Parents must be involved. Schools must change their expectations of behavior AND hold students and parents accountable. But none of that puts a bottom in a chair and gets funding, which is what most districts seem concerned about first, second, and third, these days.
