My beginner woodwinds (5th grade) meet three times a week and are all combined...flute, clarinet, and alto sax. With my clarinets, Once we have the first 6 notes, C up to A, we start doing register key rockets from C up to G. After they get a good sound there, we add a finger going down the right hand. Because we start in 5th grade, some of the clarinets are still having difficulty covering 5 and 6 at the same time due to smaller hands. For some of these kids, the full concert B-flat scale just isn't happening yet.
Other than what you've told your kids, remind them that their air has to be laser fast to reach all the way down the instrument. Remember that going from A to B for them is going from the very top of the instrument to the very bottom.
