Said Director has been there for 4 years and has 8 years of experience. They have never been taught how to read music, everything by rote. Based on observation of my lesson kids and observation of rehearsals I have discovered that they are not being taught how to count or read pitches. They write down the names of every single note and have since they were beginners. I have been told that they never practice sight reading. The director is offended by any offer from me to help. I think not being taught to read music is a violation of TEKS. Some investigating on my part has revealed that the administration doesn't care and that the director was fired from their previous school district.
My questions are:
1. How do people like this teacher acquire and retain jobs.
2. Is there something that can be done to investigate this band program from a state level entity or does the district have to care?
I am not on a vendetta in opposition to this particular teacher. I care about the kids and I am trying to help find a solution that will bring an acceptable level of music education to these children. Unfortunately any solution would almost certainly involve this teacher losing their job and the parents who hired me are pressing me for my opinion on why the program is so bad. They fear that any attempt on their part to take action would result in their children being treated poorly.
