How many lawyers trying to make partner get to tell their boss "I am after a work/life balance so I'm calling it at 40 hours but still expect to make partner at 35". Bye. How many police officers wish they could have work/life balance and can't. How many military folks wish they didn't go on 6 month deployments without their family. How many young doctors do the 24 and 48 hour shifts sleeping in the hospital? We all have choices. If you choose the balance then band directing in certain locations isn't for you. I didn't say every school should operate in this manner BUT it can be managed if there is a benefit to the community and student. At the end of the day, we are professionals but we work for the students and parents.
When I didn't have kids and my spouse was working I had no problem doing a 65 hour week. When I tried to do that with a kid in JH I found out real quickly that I could have a high school band or a family but not both. I didn't try and kill the HS band and all the things they did. I changed where I worked. Your family is more important than your job. The short answer is find a job that conforms to that lifestyle rather than making the job that doesn't try and conform.
