From my experience, the best leader is not alway the most talented kid, though. I have and have had amazing leaders who never auditioned in the region/area process. I’ve had amazing musicians who were not great leaders.
Also, I start a conversation with kids that I think would be great leaders. Sometimes, those kids just need a little encouragement.
Also, my best drum major team was made of an all-state clarinet player that everyone knew was all-state clarinet, a flute player who never spoke in class, and a drummer class clown. They were fantastic together. They were the best teachers, and the best overall leaders.
