Young teachers often can't believe that it is impossible to be friends with the kids.

There has to be an authority setting the rules and enforcing them. The sooner you get comfortable taking that role, the sooner you will find ways to be congenial with the students. Not as a friend, but as an important person in the life of every one of them.
