Just some things I think about in regard to your question:

Finding ways to level with them without blurring boundaries. Sometimes a kid just wants to be heard.

Building relationships - not just learning about them and their background but trying to understand it/them without judgement.

Classroom management - having expectations and boundaries while also commanding them to do what you want instead of demanding them to do what you want. It's more of a leader-like attitude when giving instructions instead of a tyrant.
