I'm an assistant director at a middle school. Previous director left (retired). I didn't apply for the head position because I have a young family and other responsibilities.

New director is young and very ambitious (band is life). No family.

They initially stated they were ok with my schedule issues. I do my sectionals and participate in all the required performances and such. My issue is they insist on having extra planning meetings and extra "things to do" at the band hall. These things could be done during our conference time but they insist on staying after school or after sectionals to finish these things.

I've tried explaining my time restraints but they keep saying they are in charge and there's no choice.

What would you do? I don't want to create any more tension. It's been very tense and they are extremely aggressive, even with the kids. I've also had a hard time with how aggressive they are about some things. I understand having standards but it just seems like they don't really get that these kids have other things to worry about other than band.
