I think it is a great idea. How is it “cheating”? The new system of being able to rehearse the music instead of the old dog and pony show that was used for years is a step in the right direction. Ask yourself this question. “ Do we want our students to give the best performance using procedures that enhance THEIR abilities with a type of activity that most of us use in the classroom?” BTW, our kids are not professional musicians. But if they were, I am sure that they would highlight things with a pencil in their music with whatever time they were given. Ever seen a part to a musical?
