My preferred choice for cues - for oboe as well - is clarinet. Much closer to the timbre and blend.
If it is doubling flute/upper clarinet, then it is probably in range to be covered by oboe.
Saxes are cued a bunch, but to me they do not blend the way an EH does. My exception to that is if it is a very expressive solo that demands vibrato, etc. and a presence that is appropriate for a sax to play through or above the ensemble. Then sax is great.
Use a muted trumpet - go straight to hell.
