As someone else said, each group is different, and what the previous director's involvement in the group was will be different. I went into a school where the boosters had done the entire spring trip on out-of-state years themselves. From picking the location and dates to activities, fundraising, etc. Got a lot of pushback when I took on planning the trip, even though I started from the two locations they had narrowed it down to and used the dates they had planned for.
I look at it just like I look at my relationship with my principal. I keep him informed of what I am doing so that there are no surprises - especially the kind where there is a disagreement. I expect the same of the boosters. I do not want to be sitting in the principal's office getting flak for something they or a member has done (and yes, I have been there). And I am very clear about that with the boosters. I would rather answer more questions than I want to as opposed to sitting in the principal's office having to apologize to the manager of the biggest grocery store in town because one of my boosters said something stupid.
