Re: Addressing off-task behavior during band class (phone use)
I find it best to correct these things by steeping off the podium. I will walk out to the section that I want to hear and usually behaviors improve within my proximity. If there's a phone in another section, I will walk to that section and take the phone very clearly in front them without verbally addressing the issue. Sometimes they beat me to it, but it's what I wanted anyway. I can still listen to the performing group while I do this. Multiple infractions can be addressed in a number of ways.
Our school policy allows me to take a phone but I become responsible for it. I'm ok with this.
The students know that I'm consistent so it doesn't happen to much.
Also: shorten your feedback and play more. The students signed up to play. I find this especially true with a nonvarsity/young ensemble.
