I have acquired horns at pawn shops. The thing you must keep in mind is that you may also have to take someone who can play the horn and assess its quality...the pawn brokers rarely know "what they have"...all they're concerned about is recovering the money they lost on the pawn loan.
For example, I once went in to a place and they had a year old Yamaha Xeno trumpet in like new condition. They wanted $200 for it. Right next to it was another trumpet, Bach IIRC, that looked like it had literally been run over by a truck, and the 3rd valve slide was missing. They wanted $650 for that one.
