Re: 7th Grade UIL question
A number of years ago our program was a competitive but small 4a/1c program. At that time the HS band was 9-12 with a 7-8 Ms band. Our town and school began losing population and we moved our 8th graders into the varsity/"HS" band. We began taking the 7th graders to festivals and the 8th graders remained with the HS band the entire year. Community and administration were supportive of the change. With 2 directors working all groups the 7th graders advanced rapidly. They were very well prepared for the varsity band.
We once taught at smaller 2a schools where we had 7th & 8th in the varsity band. We started band in the 5th grade. That worked okay but we could not complete at state level. Bigger band programs had an advantage and always would. Each director has to manage his/her own program to maximum success.
