Re: Monday evening rehearsals
And it isn't just the FFA kids, (which by the way are some of the hardest working kids in the world just like band kids and athletes). FFA is a thing not just in the small, rural schools. And the kids raising school, county, and major animals are doing a TON of work before and after school. They don't get weekends and they don't get holidays because those animals get fed 7 days a week two times a day. They don't get to skip the bad weather or when they don't feel well. They don't get to just change random days on when they go home because those animals when raising for show are to eat on a 12 hour schedule. For 3 years my Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, (and 1 year the entire summer), schedule was dictated by the feeding schedule of the creatures at the barn. My daughter's senior year we took a 4 day summer vacation and a 3 day Christmas trip to see extended family and those were the ONLY 7 days from May through April of that year she wasn't at the barn twice a day feeding, walking, bathing, or traveling with her animal attending shows.
Kids are also helping out around the house with siblings. Some of these kids are working to save as much as they can to avoid or at least lower the loan amount for college or because they pay for their own car so they can actually come to band rehearsals...
We think it's easy to "just make it work 1 day a week". But forget that we are trying to get 50 or 100 families to "just make it work" at the exact same time. In many settings band would better serve the students by keeping things INSIDE the school day instead of telling folks to "make it happen".
