Honestly the mainline instruments being produced today say they have a practical lifespan of 15 years until major overhaul. Any instrument company that offers a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects is one you should seriously consider. Why wouldn’t every company not offer this anyway? A defect is a defect regardless of how long it takes to show up.
Try the instruments for yourself. Any band director is qualified to tell if an instrument feels or looks cheap. Make sure parts are available. If your local music store refuses to repair a brand where parts are available then that says more about their integrity than the manufacturer’s.
