We have similar issues in our situation. All of our administrators are ex-coaches. We are a 4A program with a history of success, and our situation is probably not as dire as “Non-Share Program”. However, even with our history of success-and continued growth-there is absolutely no question where we stand in the order of things. Example: we pass our schedule out months before in advance, send it to all of the coaches, and a system is put in place for the month of August where our schedules won’t overlap. Then one night in summer band there is an “emergency meeting” of football players, so we lose 30 kids that night. If we complain, the response is “work it out with the coaches”. I guess my point is, it’s getting harder. I think many directors and schools are having these issues, but it’s still incredibly frustrating. If I were younger, I might have looked around for a better situation, but believe me when I say this: you’re probably trading one set of problems for another. You can be in the best situation, get a new head coach, counselor, principal, etc. and things can change overnight. Do the best you can. Be a good teacher. Try to work with others. And leave it at work. Now if only I can make myself do these things...
