In my experience, kids in the suburbs donít go on lockdown once a month or more. They donít alter the instructional day for a month leading up to STAAR test for extra review. They donít have HS kids raising their little brothers and sisters AND working full time hours outside the school day. They donít live in shared multi-family housing units.
Show bands are a symptom, not the problem. Go actually listen to what SWAC bands can do. Go to your local Battle of the Bands competition. There is plenty of great musicianship and teaching there. And if some of those inner city drumlines had the same specialists available 6-12 like the suburban schools do, youíd see a huge shift in how drumline competitions were won.
