Re: hiring woes
I do not believe that the trouble is with "working for someone". I believe it is a problem with overreach from someone in a HBD position. The hiring actually comes from the principal or DFA, so the ABD really works for them. After a certain amount of time, that becomes clear to the young director. To my knowledge, the HBD cannot fire the ABD directly. Therefore, the ABD works for the principal and with the HBD.
What if it were like trades?
Assistant Band Director = Apprentice
Associate Band Director = Journeyman
Head Band Director = Master
How many clock hours or years would you assign to each rank? When does someone "graduate" from being your assistant?
