Many years ago, I was the percussion director at a high school. Our 14 member percussion ensemble qualified for state. We were far enough away that this trip involved a truck and large trailer, a school bus, meals, and hotel rooms for everyone. Well over $1,000 to take this group to TSSEC. The next morning, it was pouring rain when we arrive at the contest site. It was raining so hard that there was 3" of water in the parking lot because it couldn't drain fast enough. We pushed all of the equipment in during that rain, and all of the students were completely soaked through and using paper towels and hand dryers in the bathroom to attempt to dry off. We performed our piece and did well on it. The judge made one comment about buying mallets for all of the different instruments from the same manufacturer and family to get better matching tone qualities, circled a 3, and sent us on our way. I was done with the TSSEC after that.
