Because in too many cases, failing to fall all over a kid with praise is "destroying a kid" and "tearing them down" .. and it's also quite possible that a kid MAY have played well, but that said judge/professor has a higher standard on that particular piece. Or there were technique issues or interpretation issues that made the performance GOOD but not a first division. For example, if someone were performing a baroque piece, and EVERYTHING ELSE was note-perfect, yet they didn't start their trills on the top note, they wouldn't earn a 1 at state from me. IN THE MOMENT is NOT when the judge should be discussing it. TSSEC is already overbooked and overscheduled.
