I'm a retiree and I disagree with the notion that the problem is "...the new society that we live in...". I don't believe that's the problem at all.
I taught band in Texas for 35 years and have been retired for 6, so I'm a product of "the old society" and the "new society" is simply not the problem. I've been there, done that, got all the t-shirts and have experienced a lot during those years and am basing my opinion on all I've experienced during that time in the trenches.
Based on what's been written here about this situation, I wouldn't have considered that position either in 1981 when I started teaching and I wouldn't take it now in 2022 if I still were.
What was described was very accurately deduced and analyzed by the previous responders to this post in my opinion. They "get it".
Some things are timeless. That includes toxic situations.
