Re: flute/sax/bassoon/oboe vibrato
Trevor Wye and Mary Karen Clarify have some good studies that address vibrato for flute. The breath vibrato is used primarily for flute and oboe. Learning brass/sax vibrato came easily for me since my first director was a fine trumpet/flugal player and I copied his jaw vibrato. I started flute in college and was surrounded by great flute players such as Dr. Garner and Mary Karen Clardy. They were great role models.
As a brass and flute player I discovered you cannot use a jaw vibrato on flute. Breath pulsing eighth notes in triplets without tongue helps to develop the breath vibrato for flute (and oboe). You want a natural organic vibrato that can be modulated to shape the musical phrases. It should compliment your tone and offer an avenue for expressiveness.
