It's hard to believe all the resources I give them to help their practice! I've played videos of every beginner line in the book on every instrument. Line 1-10 on flute,cl etc then the next module Lines 11-19 on fl cl etc on up...
Imagine how good we would have sounded if we had our own iPad as the resource for home practice?! I instead had a tape deck! Ha!
I also coach soccer and realized that they won't practice on their own either - they need the team with structured time outside of school with a coach there. So this reality means more work for us band directors. After school band practice time
One tip that worked well for me was a Bandapalooza where I had all my Flutes come one day and we worked on the skills they needed, then Cl, then Trp, then TbnPer and in a Mon/Wed Mon/Wed we got through everyone. They got a cookie and rode the late bus home. 72% turnout! I'll do it again as a Jan/Feb PracticeAThon to raise money by practicing.
The trend is to pass everyone - and grades mean nothing. A practice record with 0 minutes is a 50%? hmm. If I don't show up to work - do I get 50% pay? sounds good to me!! I'll get 2 jobs and not show up TO EITHER and then companies GIVE ME my 50%+50%!! HAAAAAAAA
