As a Euphonium player I have questioned the need of the compensation system. I made All-state Symphonic band with a non-compensating 3 valve. In college I bought a compensating 4 valve Besson and explored all the alternate fingerings Don Baird taught me. Years later I bought a 4 valve non-compensating Yamaha 621. I loved the fast action of the shorter valves with the side 4th. The intonation was easily adjustable and my top players were not held back by not having "compensation"
Advanced euphonium teacher/players please explain the need for the compensating system.
