Re: Alt Unit in Drill
Teaching in small rural schools most of my career I started designing my shows with blocks of backfield sections which had limited marching demands. In the past these students were sideline alternates due to failing grade averages and they would be assigned to helping with props and other equipment. The alternate sections gave these students opportunities to participate and amazed me when 100% became eligible allowing them to perform all the way to state level. Some would say this compromised the bands ability at state but my priorities were keeping as many kids in band as possible. In that regard it was a success and the band size grew as we kept this philosophy. The band grew from 42 to 105 in just 5 years.
